During summer of 2013, I joined a competitive externship program at Cook Children’s. I worked in the emergency department full time for 10 weeks working alongside a RN unit guide. During the program I also received extensive pediatric education during weekly in-services exclusively for the externs. In the ED, I followed the nursing process, administered medications, inserted IV’s, assisted in traumas, assisted in triage, performed patient care, and learned how to treat a variety of pediatric complaints. I loved working with the kids and being part of the ED team. The program ended in July 2013, and since I have volunteered at several camps for kids because of my passion for pediatric population.
