I worked in the summer nurse extern program summer of 2014 at the Harris Emergerncy Department and continue to work now as a PRN Nurse Extern. The ED has a brand new home with 100 beds, state of the art equipment, and a sky bridge connecting it to the rest of the hospital. The ED is a Level 2 Trauma Center. During this 9 week program, I was paired with a RN and learned from and assisted her. I performed IV insertions, NG Tube insertions, venipuncture, splinting, assessments, documentation, monitoring, wound care, and many other routine emergency nursing procedures. After the program, I was asked to stay on and continue in the Harris ED as an independent Nurse Extern. I perform similar duties to a Patient Care Technician with privileges to start IV’s and insert NG/OG tubes. I love the fast paced, teamwork driven critical environment of the emergency department. I enjoy seeing a variety of patients and not knowing what will come in the door next.
